I am interested in questioning the way Society and cultural contexts, Tradition and religious beliefs, shape self-identity and influence relationship between individuals
I believe that Art is all about sharing and communicating.
A piece of Art is a shape born from a reaction to the world.
The artist uses what he witnesses as a modelling paste to create something personal and unique. It becomes a shape, with a specific texture, a colour, a purpose.
My aim is to expose and examine self-identity and individuality and how it comes into shape.
I question the way social and cultural contexts, traditions and religious beliefs, shape self-image and influence relationship between individuals.
I explore mediums of communications and cultural contexts in my pieces in order to expose the Self and reveal how the individual experience is a universal experience.
As a woman, I often present a female point of view.
I started working on mixed media sculptures in 1997.
At that time I used recycled books in my art works since I was working in a bookshop while studying. Following my MA graduation in 1998 the work developed into textile work and paintings.
Writing is very present in my work. I either use typography or include books to the pieces. The main mediums are fabric, wood and paper.
Accumulation and repetition are, as well, part of the creative process and I often work in series.
The textiles pieces shown here are mainly a series of work on Burkas, the Afghan women outdoor dresses.
I started this body of work in 1997, on Woman's day, after seeing a documentary on the situation of Afghan Women.
In the Burkas Series, the stress is on the meaning of clothing as a simile of identity. I expose the tension arising between men's vision of women, shaped by religious belief and political conflicts, and the resulting women vision of their own self. The conflict between preservation and destruction of identity, frailty and fortitude, freedom and seclusion.
I question the paradoxes created by traditions and the separating line between what is shown and what is hidden. I often include organic material such as hair to the pieces to emphasise the presence/ absence of the body. Each piece can represent many aspects of self-identity and question the way self-image is shaped by its milieu.
The painting work is made in series.
The Wishes Series, started in 2000, with collecting wishes from people, is an eclectic
mix of typographic painting.
The emphasis is on diversity. The paintings are very different in styles, shapes and colours. The individual desire is represented plainly, in writing, sometimes readable and sometimes beyond readability. I sometimes include portraits to the paintings.
I am aiming to show the paradoxes of communication and the incommunicability of the self. I refer to posters and advertising codes to question the essence of desire and the way we communicate.
Is it possible to communicate or express your desires? Isn't the meaning of desire that the dream can be never reached? Are we imprisoned in the ever wishing and needing?
I aim to express the variety of peoples and leave desire to its essence, which is unfathomable.
